Frequently Asked Questions
Where does your inspiration come from? Do you use pictures, drawings, or the real tree?
Growing up here on the north Oregon coast, I have a huge database of trees in my head. I can work off bar napkin sketches or pictures as well. One of my ideas is to make the trees around Clatsop County out of copper (that big tree on the corner of the Flavel House). I can make tree sculpture wherever the trees are. My materials and tools are very portable.
How long does it take you to make a tree?
The construction time all depends on the detail the tree needs and the size. For example, a large tree mounted on a window or a wall or one designed to be viewed from farther away would take less detail if silhouette was the primary goal of the piece. I can spend 6 hours on a tree only 5" tall, but it would be very detailed.
